GUWAHATI:

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the construction of the Jorhat-Majuli connecting bridge would begin by February 20.

Launching the state government’s flagship programme, RE-SVAYEM (Re-designed Swami Vivekananda Assam Youth Empowerment) scheme at Majuli on Wednesday, Sonowal said that the 15th Finance Commission had granted Rs 1,095 crore for the construction of roads and embankments in Majuli, which is the world’s largest river island.

“A host of activities have already been undertaken for the inauguration of construction work of the bridge connecting Jorhat and Majuli,” Sonowal said.

“On behalf of the people of Assam, I express my gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for earmarking Rs 34,000 crore for the development of Assam, which is so far the highest allocation in the Union Budget,” he said.

Sonowal also distributed solar lights, water filters, and agriculture tools under various schemes implemented by the Scheduled Caste Board to the beneficiaries.

Speaking on the RE-SVAYEM scheme, Sonowal said the state government had launched the scheme to empower youths to create rightful vocations for them.

“By making good use of the scheme, the youths will have to set the right examples of being self-reliant,” he said.
