Heroin worth over Rs 21 crore seized in Assam; two held

GUWAHATI:

Assam Police recovered heroin weighing 3.45 kilograms from a truck at a special check-post set up by personnel of Laharijan police post near Dillai Tiniali in Karbi Anglong on Sunday morning.

Official sources said a truck (AS-04-AC-5213) coming from Manipur was intercepted at the special Naka by the police around 5:30 am.

A thorough search subsequently led to the recovery of six packets of heroin from the cabin of the truck.

Two persons – the driver and co-driver of the truck – have been arrested. Police identified them as Rame Gurung (27), of Gopinal village under Senapati police station in Manipur and Bhim Gurung (33), of Tangta Tumi village under Sekmai police station in Manipur.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the heroine was en route towards Guwahati from Imphal.

The market value of the seized heroin, according to an estimate by police, would exceed Rs 21 crore (Rs 7 crore for 1kg).

We may note that the Assam Police has intensified its crackdown against illicit trafficking of drugs since June 26, 2020, with as many as 200 such cases reported till August 30, 2020.

In Karbi Anglong alone, heroin and brown sugar worth about Rs 15crore have been seized in the past three to four months, police sources informed.
