Five college students die in road mishap in Assam's Cachar district

GUWAHATI:

Five college students died in a road accident at Lakhipur near Kalain under Katigorah police station in Cachar district of Assam on Wednesday afternoon, Cachar superintendent of police B.L. Meena confirmed.

“The students were travelling on a Maruti Alto vehicle which collided head-on with a truck near Kalain. The five were students of Nabin Chandra College in Badarpur and, all of them have been pronounced dead,” Meena told this correspondent on Wednesday evening.

The students were returning home and heading towards Kalain in the car when the collision with the truck took place around 1.30 pm.

The deceased have been identified as Arif Ahmed Laskar, Monjur Ahmed, Jafar Hussain, Salman Ahmed and Gobindo Baishnab. All of them were B.Sc first semester students at the college, sources said.

Police sources said that two students were pronounced dead in a hospital at Kalain while one succumbed to his injuries at Silchar Medical College and Hospital where he was earlier referred to in a critical condition.

Two other students were found dead inside the car which fell into a roadside ditch after the collision.

Sources said people gathered in the area and staged a protest.
