Elementary schools in Assam to resume classes from Jan 1

GUWAHATI:

The Assam education department on Monday has decided to reopen schools for classes Nursery to VI from January 1, 2021.

The decision was taken after discussions with the primary teachers’ association, State education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

“The classes for students of Nursery to VI standards would resume from January 1, 2020, in a staggered manner. However, the education department would issue the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and detailed guidelines (regarding the schedules) in the coming days,” Sarma said.

All the teachers would have to undergo mandatory COVID-19 tests.

The Union home ministry had earlier allowed states to start classes after October 15, depending on the COVID-19 situation in their respective states.

Both government and private schools have been allowed to resume classes. “However, the parents would decide whether to send their wards to attend classes in schools or not,” the minister said.

“We have also allowed (the) limited opening of hostels for final year students of colleges from December 15. College principals have been directed to take measures to clean the hostels,” he added.
