COVID situation in Assam under control; don't spread false rumours: Himanta

GUWAHATI:

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged people not to panic or indulge in spreading false rumours about the COVID-19 situation in the state, which he said was “under control” and by no means "alarming".

Sarma said that the rumours spread over the past three days of another lockdown being on the cards have only triggered panic among people, which might affect the economic situation as well as the academic environment.

“We have seen how COVID-19 hit the economy hard last year. Now traders and small businessmen have been asking me, out of panic, whether such a regulation would be imposed again in the wake of the lockdown rumours doing the rounds,” he said.

He informed that the number of COVID-19 cases every day in the state has not crossed 25 and that the situation was under control.

The minister added that if the situation were to aggravate in future, then “we will inform the people through a media conference about what regulations need to be imposed.”

“But as of now, there is no need for any restriction. But yes, we would suggest that people adhere to the protocols of wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, using sanitisers and, of course, getting vaccinated when the time comes,” he added.
