GUWAHATI:

Records continue to tumble at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre here, even during a pandemic, with a kilogram of handmade special orthodox tea, “Manohari Gold,” selling for a whopping Rs 75,000 on Thursday.

The tea was sold during sale number 44 by Contemporary Brokers Private Limited and purchased by Vishnu Tea Company, a Guwahati-based tea trader.

In July last year, a kilogram of the same mark of tea from Manohari Tea Estate, a garden-based in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh, was sold for Rs 50,000.

“Manohari Tea Estate has made extra efforts to produce this speciality tea in September and sent the same to GTAC for sale.

The same mark of tea also set the earlier record at Rs 50,000 per kg by this prestigious garden. Now they have broken their own record,” Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association (GTABA) secretary, Dinesh Bihani said.

“This is a great achievement for the tea estate to have realised such a high rate at the auctions amidst the pandemic,” he said.

Vishnu Tea Company will sell the tea globally on its digital e-commerce website, 9amtea.com.

Speciality teas have not just made their mark, but continue to raise the bar at the auctions in recent years owing to the growing demand for the rare premium segment varieties which manufacturers produce in low quantities.

Manohari Gold, reportedly, is prepared from small buds and not tea leaves.
