Assam’s Goalpara gets national award for water conservation efforts

GUWAHATI

Assam’s Goalpara has been conferred the National Water Award 2019, with the district receiving the third prize in the category of “Best district in Northeast (water conservation)” at a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Union Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat presented the award.

“Encouraged to share that Goalpara has been awarded the National Water Award under Best District, Water Conservation Category today in a ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi,” Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka informed through Twitter.

“This includes the district’s works for rainwater harvesting/groundwater recharge in Anganwadi centres, water purifiers in schools, convergence of schemes with MGNREGA, fisheries, conservation, irrigation for creation of assets and livelihoods. The ministry also lauded conservation efforts at Urpad Beel,” the DC said.
