GUWAHATI:

Hours ahead of Thursday’s second phase Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Assam, unidentified miscreants attacked the convoy of United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro in a locality near Kokrajhar town on Wednesday evening.

Boro, who was travelling in a bullet-proof vehicle en-route to the party’s office in Kokrajhar, had a narrow escape as the miscreants hurled stones and other objects towards the six-vehicle convoy.

The windshields of at least four vehicles, including the one on which the UPPL president was commuting, were damaged.

Boro, who escaped unhurt, later told a television channel that the attack was the handiwork of political goons and that such pre-poll violence was “shameful” and needed to be condemned in the strongest possible way.

“I would urge the authorities for deployment of adequate security for the polls tomorrow so that people can come to vote without fear. It is now time to answer the 'bullets with ballots',” the UPPL chief said.
