In another recurrence of elephant-human conflict in Assam, a 20-year-old pregnant elephant died because of electrocution on December 16 in the Sikajhora village of Chirang district.

According to reports, the pregnant elephant died near Manas National Park.

The recent incident took the death toll of elephants in the district to six since August.

“At least five elephants have been electrocuted in Chirang alone since August. Villagers steal power to electrify their fences to prevent the elephants from destroying their paddy fields,” said Deputy Commissioner Gautam Talukdar.

Chirang Divisional Forest Officer, Brahmananda Patiri informed that seven people were held in connection with the recent deaths of elephants in the district and others are absconding.

“We are in touch with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) and, 29 transformers have been disconnected in the area, as per provisions of electricity rules (regarding the improper use of power connections),” he said.
