Assam polls 2021: Anti-incumbency factor grows within BJP in Moran

DIBRUGARH:

Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, an anti-incumbency factor has been growing within the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Moran constituency.

A battle would be between sitting BJP MLA Chakradhar Gogoi and first time Congress candidate Pranjal Ghatowar, who is the son of Congress veteran leader Paban Singh Ghatowar.

“Anti-incumbency factor has been within BJP in Moran because many senior BJP members opposed him and don’t want him to get a ticket this time. The locals of his constituency levelled serious allegations against Chakradhar Gogoi,” said a resident of Moran.

In the 2016 Assembly election, the BJP candidate defeated Congress strongman Paban Singh Ghatowar by a margin of 16, 231 votes.

Moran was a bastion of Congress, and the tea tribes played a major role while deciding the fate of the candidate.

It’s a debut election for Pranjal Singh Ghatowar, and he is a new face of Congress from Moran. Earlier his father Paban Singh Ghatowar and his mother Jibon Tara Ghatowar represented the seat.

“Congress has been trying hard to regain its old bastion. But it is difficult for them because BJP has strengthened its base at the grassroot level over the years. It is an interesting poll battle in Moran,” said Rupak Bhattacharjee, a political observer.

The other candidates from the Moran constituency are Mohini Mohan Ligira (Raijor Dal), Sanjib Changmai (AJP), Raphael Kujar (IND), Eliash Sichan (IND).
