Assam Police seize banned cough syrup worth Rs 30 lakh

GUWAHATI:

A team from the criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam Police, on Thursday, confiscated 9,600 bottles of prohibited cough syrup, packed in 60 cartons.

Official sources said the estimated market value of the consignment (Eskuf), containing the prohibited drug codeine phosphate, is about Rs. 30 lakh.

Acting on a tip-off, the CID team first intercepted a mini-truck loaded with 20 cartons (160 bottles per carton) of the prohibited cough syrup in Beharbari area under Basistha police station around 12:45 pm.

Police seized the consignment in the presence of witnesses and arrested four individuals.

Led by the four suspects, the CID team seized an additional 40 cartons of the same cough syrup from a kutcha house at Kali Mandir Path in Beharbari.

Police also registered a case concerning the matter at the CID police station.
