Assam: PM Modi to campaign for AGP candidate Punakon Baruah

 |

DIBRUGARH:

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Punakon Baruah on March 9 filed nomination papers for Chabua constituency after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) left the seat for their alliance partner, AGP.

Sources said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be coming to Chabua on March 20 to campaign for Punakon Baruah.

It may be noted that after the BJP left the seat for their alliance partner AGP, grassroot BJP members and supporters of Chabua MLA Binod Hazarika were annoyed with the party decision.

The BJP denied a ticket to Lahowal MLA Rituparna Baruah from his constituency.

Punakon Baruah is the brother of Rituparna Baruah, who received a ticket from Chabua. He is also the Dibrugarh district president of the AGP.

“AGP has no base in Chabua because the party is weak. Prime Minister Modi is coming to Chabua to campaign for AGP candidate Punakon Baruah. This time things are not clear how far Punokan Baruah will take advantage as a AGP candidate from Chabua,” said a political analyst.

The BJP has a firm base in Chabua which had witnessed massive protest during Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Among the other candidates who filed from Chabua seat are Ajay Phukan (INC), Bhaben Baruah (Raijor Dal), Ananta Hazarika (LJP), Priyanka Neog (Independent), Prakash Tanti (IND).
