GUWAHATI:

Another employee of the Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer, taking the death toll of employees of both Nagaon and Cachar paper mills to 81.

Rupam Nath Mazumder (55), a paper machine technician (electrical) at Cachar Paper Mill, died at his Hailakandi residence around midnight on Monday.

Sources said Mazumdar’s health suddenly deteriorated on Monday night.

The Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in Hailakandi district and the Nagaon Paper Mill in Morigaon district have been non-functional since October 2015, and March 2017, respectively.

Employees of the two mills have not received their salaries since the mills closed down.

Manobendra Chakraborty, the president of the Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions (JACRU) of the two paper mills, said that Mazumdar could not afford proper medical treatment because of financial problems.

Chakraborty also slammed the Assam Government for not taking any initiatives to revive the two paper mills.

“It’s all about intent. When the Kerala government can take initiatives to take over Hindustan Newsprint Limited (HNL), put up for sale by the central government, why can’t the Assam government do the same. Lives of two lakh youths depend on the two mills in the state, and so many jobs could be created if they revive the mills,” he said.
