KOHIMA:

BJP National Spokesperson and Nagaland legislator, Mmhonlumo Kikon on Thursday informed that the Assam-Mizoram border tension is being discussed at the highest level adding that a proactive approach towards resolving the issue has been put in place.

In a conversation with TNT-The Northeast Today, Kikon has appreciated the Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal for taking the initiative to call on the Mizoram CM Zoramthanga and for apprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of the same.

He informed that BJP has already reached out to the Chief Ministers of the two States including all the stakeholders adding that the matter is being properly handled to prevent the issue from flaring up.

He claimed that they have been successful in containing the issue and asserted that high-level talks at the level of both the Chief Minister and senior officials are ongoing.

Both the Assam and Mizoram Police have agreed and assured that the issue will be amicably resolved, he added.

"Hopefully the issue will be settled in less than a few days’ time", Kikon said.

He recalled that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his address at the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) meeting held in September 2019, had mentioned that all the states in Northeast are free from the Congress rule and border-related issues should be initiated by the respective Chief Ministers.

“In that spirit, the Assam CM has appropriately taken the initiative to resolve the issue in the swiftest time possible,” the BJP national spokesperson added.

Kikon was of the view that the current situation is being handled in a very swift manner “unlike the past when there was congress rule”.
