Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court at Raj Bhavan here on Sunday.

Chief Justice Dhulia took over from Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh, who was appointed as the acting Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, following the retirement of the then Chief Justice Ajai Lamba in September last year.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was present at the swearing-in-ceremony.

The Union Law ministry had on January 7 last notified the appointment of Justice Dhulia as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.

“The President of India, in exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, appointed Shri Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court,” a law ministry statement read.

With Justice Dhulia’s appointment as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, all the 25 high courts in the country now have regular chief justices.

Chief Justice Dhulia had completed LLB in the year 1986 and initially practiced before the Allahabad High Court, before he shifted to the High Court of Uttarakhand. He was appointed judge of Uttarakhand High Court in 2008.
