A journalist of a city-based media house was injured while he tried to save a nurse at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital here from being allegedly attacked by a man on December 14 evening, police sources confirmed.

GMCH superintendent Abhijit Sarma on December 15 informed reporters that Polly Chetia, 29, a staff nurse of the pediatric surgery department, was attacked by a man, Pankaj Baishya, with a sharp weapon around 7.35pm on Monday.

“However, when she raised a cry for help, Afnur Ali, a journalist, tried to save the woman, but was struck and injured between his ear and cheek. Both the injured (Polly and Ali) were taken to the casualty department. CT scans were done and found to be normal while the wounds were stitched. They are recovering well, but currently under observation,” Sarma said.

“Polly said that she knew Baishya for two years but did not have any contact over the past two months. We immediately informed the police and lodged an FIR against the accused (at Bhangagarh police station),” he said.

The accused who claims to be a support staff at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, has been arrested by the police.
