Assam Jatiya Parishad flays Amit Shah’s statement on CAA; warns of statewide stir

GUWAHATI:

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has condemned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement, made during an election rally in Bengal on Thursday that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would be notified once the vaccination drive against COVID-19 was over in the country.

AJP Vice-President Adip Kumar Phukan, while addressing newsmen here on Friday, condemned Shah’s statement, alleging that it shows the “anti-Assam” stance of the incumbent BJP government.

The regional party warned of a massive agitation if the BJP government implement CAA in the state after the COVID vaccination drive.

“If the BJP government forcefully implements the Act, which is not only anti-Constitution but harmful to the secular fabric of the country, then the people of Assam will have to oppose the move,” Phukan said.

It may be mentioned that the AJP, floated as a regional political party in September last year, which was an outcome of the anti-CAA movement that gained momentum by the end of 2019.

The regional party also condemned the government’s failure to revive two non-functional mills at Nagaon and the Cachar Paper Mills.
