GUWAHATI:

Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Monday, introduced a bill to repeal the Provincialisation of Madrassa in Assam.

“Once the bill is passed, the practice of running Madrassa by the Government in Assam will come to an end,” Sarma said.

"All the state-run madrassas and Sanskrit tols (schools) would be shut down as the government cannot support any religious education in a secular society," Sarma had stated earlier.

This move led to sharp political reactions from the opposition.

According to Sarma, there are over 600 state-run madrassas across Assam on which the government spends Rs 260 crore annually.
