Assam deports 19 Bangladeshi nationals

Nineteen Bangladeshi nationals, who were lodged in different jails of Assam over the past two to three years, were repatriated to their country through the Sutarkandi international border in Karimganj district on Thursday.

According to sources, the Bangladeshi nationals, five of whom were female, were arrested from different places of Assam after they were found to have entered Indian territory without valid documents.

“They were arrested two to three years back from various districts including Nagaon (3), Kokrajhar (3), Karimganj (3), Dhubri (2), Nalbari (2), Sonitpur (1), Cachar (1), Dhemaji (1), Charaideo (1) and Kamrup Metro (2) after they violated the Foreigners Act and Passport Rules,” an official said.

Thereafter, they were produced before courts and sent to different jails of the state.

Sources said that the process of sending them back to their nation began after completion of their detention term in jail, following which the central government had contacted the Bangladesh government for their repatriation.

“After completion of the necessary formalities on Thursday, they were repatriated to Bangladesh in the presence of police officials and BSF jawans through the Sutarkandi border in Karimganj district,” a source said.
