GUWAHATI:

Assam police have arrested one person in connection with the alleged assault on a journalist at Mirza, about 30km from here, on the eve of National Press Day on Sunday.

Milan Mahanta, who is associated with a leading Assamese daily, was tied up to an electric pole in the heart of the town and allegedly roughed up by three persons.

According to sources, Mahanta had been reporting on illegal gambling activities in the town ahead of Diwali, and the persons who had allegedly assaulted him are suspected to be involved in the “gambling racket”.

The journalist who suffered injuries was later unshackled and taken to a medicine store by people who had gathered there, following which he lodged an FIR at Palashbari police station.

Pictures/videos of the incident had gone viral on electronic and social media, drawing widespread condemnation from not just the media fraternity but a cross-section of society and groups.

“We have so far arrested one person by the name of Diganta Das in connection with the case. However, the three persons named by Mahanta in the FIR – Sanjay Thakuria, his brother Budhu Thakuria and Biswajit Das, are still absconding from the day of the incident,” Palashbari police officer in charge, S.S. Hazari said on Wednesday.

“We are carrying out searches and raiding places at night to nab the three persons. They are currently hiding, but apparently out of town with their mobile phones switched off,” Hazari said.
