Assam: Congress leader Gautam Dhanowar resigns from party after being denied ticket

DIBRUGARH:

Assam Congress leader Gautam Dhanowar, on Thursday, resigned from the party after being denied a ticket from the Digboi Assembly seat.

Earlier, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) had given the ticket to young Congress leader Sibnath Chetia for the same seat.

The Congress instead gave a ticket to his brother Manoj Dhanowar from the Lahowal Assembly seat, sidelining Gautam from contesting.

Following the turn of events, Gautam tendered his resignation to APCC president Ripun Bora.

Meanwhile, BJP incumbent MLA Suren Phukan was given a ticket for the Digboi LAC for the second consecutive term.

Taking to his official Facebook page, Gautam posted, “I have no question regarding the MLA ticket of Digboi LAC. But I felt pain when the party hierarchy even did not bother to seek my opinion as to include me in any discussion for making winning strategies in Digboi LAC, though I held a portfolio in APCC.”

“Continuous meetings were being held in Guwahati Rajiv Bhawan, regarding Digboi seat, but I was neither informed nor asked to attend the meeting by Hapjan BCC,” he added.

Gautam stated he had been a sincere and dedicated worker for Congress since the initial stage of joining the party, but the party failed to acknowledge his services.

We may note that Gautam’s family has been serving the Congress party for several years, with Digboi LAC once considered a fortress for the party.

However, the BJP won the seat for the first time in the 2016 Assam Assembly elections.
