Assam CM virtually inaugurates 200 playgrounds under rural scheme

GUWAHATI:

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, virtually inaugurated 200 playgrounds in the state under the Chief Minister’s Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana (CMSGUY) during a programme organised by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department at Nehru Stadium on Monday.

“Sports infrastructure has been developed in the rural and semi-urban areas at a rapid pace in the state, and we have encouraged a conducive environment for sports,” Sonowal said.

He also highlighted the state government’s initiatives to organise football tournaments in tea gardens, including village Olympics for unearthing talent from the grassroots level.

“Sports has the power to unify society and strengthen peace and harmony. The young generation must take up sports as a way of life and strive to achieve excellence. The youth must stay away from drugs and take care of their health by engaging in sports activities,” he said.

Sonowal also distributed one-time financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 to each of the 1,000 sportspersons who had brought laurels to the state at national and international events, sports pension to former players and equipment to players of Khelo India Youth Games-2020.

Besides this, the Chief Minister inaugurated the renovation work of the Bimala Prasad Chaliha Swimming Pool and inaugurated the newly constructed building of Assam Fencing Association on the premises of Nehru Stadium.

Highlighting the reach of sports and the popularity of a sports person, he said no other field provides such exposure.

“The state government is taking a lot of initiatives for the rapid progress of sports infrastructure and sporting culture,” he said, citing the example of athlete Hima Das who achieved success through dedication and perseverance.

He also said the state government had implemented the Assam Sports Policy to encourage sportspersons and safeguard the interests of the players.

“Financial assistance was provided to Hima Das and other sportspersons under the policy,” he said.

He further urged aspiring players to take inspiration from the success of Hima and called on parents to motivate their children to take up sports.
