Assam CID arrests 2 more in multi-crore scholarship scam

Among the arrested in the case so far include five headmasters, one teacher, six owners of CSPs of nationalised banks, a president of a school management committee besides at least 11 middlemen and a couple of electronic data processors.

GUWAHATI

The criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam Police arrested two more accused in connection with the multi-crore pre-matric scholarship scam, official sources informed here on January 4 evening.

A CID team, along with the help of local police, raided various locations under Nagarbera and Boko police stations in Kamrup district in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday and arrested the duo, identified as Md. Ashraf Ali (33) and Mustafa Ahmed (31).

Ali, who hails from Badla Pathar village under Nagarbera police station, is a business correspondent cum owner of a CSP (customer service point) of a nationalised bank at Malibari Bazaar.

Ahmed, from Jawakatadiya village under Boko police station, played the role of a middleman to misappropriate scholarship money meant for students of the minority community in Barpeta district, sources said.

With this development, the number of arrests in connection with the CID police station case (number 20/2020 under sections 120(B)/406/409/419/420/468/471 IPC/ added sections 66C and 66D I.T Act) has gone up to 32.

Among the arrested in the case so far include five headmasters, one teacher, six owners of CSPs of nationalised banks, a president of a school management committee besides at least 11 middlemen and a couple of electronic data processors.

They are alleged to have been involved in the misappropriation of pre-matric scholarship funds of about Rs 10 crore, meant for economically disadvantaged minority students.
