Assam Chief Minister Sonowal files nomination from Majuli constituency

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday filed his nomination papers from Majuli for the second term for the upcoming Assembly polls.

Chief Minister Sonowal submitted his nomination papers before Majuli Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi.

Top BJP leaders including Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh, BJP’s Assam in-charge Bijayant Panda, Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP chief Ranjit Dass accompanied Sarbananda Sonowal.

Sarbananda Sonowal bagged the Majuli seat in 2016 Assembly polls by a margin of 18,923 votes against Congress fielded former minister Rajib Lochan Pegu.

Pegu represented Majuli for three consecutive terms since 2001.

As per the election affidavit submitted by Sarbananda Sonowal, he has total assets worth ₹ 3.17 crore, an increase of ₹ 1.32 crore between 2016 and 2021.

Majuli goes to polls in the first phase of Assam Assembly election on March 27.
