Assam: AJP president accuses BJP of being involved in 'illegal coal business'

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, on Thursday, slammed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state for being involved in the illegal coal business in Assam.

Addressing a public meeting at Margherita in Upper Assam, which saw a turnaround of 10,000 people, Gogoi accused the BJP government of running the nexus with coal mafias.

“Under Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the whole illegal business has been running,” Gogoi said.

“In 2017, the North-East Coalfield (NEC) received Rs 67 crore, and now NEC has been suffering huge losses because of only one man- Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma. Each truck loaded with illegal coal has to pay Rs 38,000 to Rs 40,000 which goes to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and MLA Bhaskar Sharma,” he said.

The AJP president also accused BJP of cheating the people in the name of development.

“The BJP has done nothing in the last five years in Assam. They brought the Citizenship Amendment Act by depriving the people of Assam. The BJP is trying to create a rift among the people in Assam by dividing them in the name of religion. It (BJP) is posing a major threat for the secular fabric of Assam,” Gogoi said.

The AJP also held a joining programme at Buridehing Mouza under 124 Margherita constituency, where over 100 people joined the party.
