A residential colony under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Assam will provide shelter to 16 homeless families from Panchgram and Kalinagar areas of Hailakandi district
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to inaugurate the residential colony at Panchgram, 24 km from Silchar town, later this month.
The panchayat and rural development department and Hailakandi district administration are jointly supervising the project.
Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner M. N. Dahal, along with the chief executive officer of Hailakandi Zilla Parishad, J. Shukla visited the site on December 16 and took stock of the progress of work such as electricity and water supply connections.
The Hailakandi Zilla Parishad CEO, Shukla, hailed the initiative by the government and said that all necessary arrangements were readied at the residential colony for the families.
The officials also interacted with some beneficiaries and met panchayat representatives and residents who lauded the government’s gesture.
PMAY is an initiative of the central government to provide shelter to poor people.
The scheme, launched in 2015, has two components - Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) for the urban poor and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) (PMAY-G and also PMAY-R) for the rural poor.
