Assam: 145 people fall ill after consuming food during Diphu Medical College programme

GUWAHATI:

At least 145 people, including children, fell ill after consuming food served at the inaugural programme of the first academic session of the MBBS course in Diphu Medical College in Karbi Anglong, Assam on Tuesday.

“The status as of now is that 145 patients were admitted to the hospital of which 28 of them have been discharged. The rest are all doing fine,” Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on Wednesday.

Sarma said that he had also consumed the food during the programme and had “experienced some discomfort in the tummy.”

Meanwhile, the district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

“Samples of the food distributed during the programme have been collected by food inspectors,” sources said.
