After BTC, ruling BJP triumphs in Tiwa council polls

After taking the reins of a three-party alliance in the Bodoland Territorial Council earlier this month, the ruling BJP in Assam registered a landslide victory in the Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) polls on Saturday, bagging 33 of the 36 seats, with ally AGP bagging two seats and Opposition Congress winning just one seat.

Of the 33 seats in its kitty, BJP won one seat uncontested.

The triumph comes just a few months ahead of the Assembly elections in the state next year.

Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, congratulated the party workers (karyakartas) saying that their dedication and hard work were behind the impressive victory in the TAC election.

Thanking the electorate for reposing their faith in BJP and giving a huge mandate in the TAC elections, Sonowal reiterated the government’s promise of all-round and inclusive development of the region through good governance and efficient administration.

Assam minister and key BJP strategist in the northeast, Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the victory as a momentous day.

“People of Assam reassert faith in PM Narendra Modi as BJP registers a massive victory in Tiwa Autonomous Council. Heartfelt gratitude to people and our committed BJP karyakartas,” Sarma informed through Twitter.

Held after almost a decade after protests from a community had stalled the poll process, the Tiwa Autonomous Council elections witnessed an impressive voter turnout of 67 per cent up to closing time on Thursday evening.

The state election commission conducted the polls in 35 of the 36 council constituencies across Nagaon, Morigaon, Hojai and Kamrup (Metro) districts amid heavy security and by adhering to the prescribed COVID-19 safety protocols.
