29 arrested in ₹10 crore scholarship scam in Assam

The criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam Police has so far arrested 29 persons in connection with the multi-crore pre-matric scholarship scam, with two more accused arrested since Monday.

Speaking to official sources, Abdul Razzak (accused), who is the principal of Uttar Dharmapur Jatiya Vidyalaya, Dharmapur under Alopati police station in lower Assam’s Barpeta district, was arrested on Tuesday.

“He was produced before the court today, which has granted four days police remand,” Assam Police sources said on Tuesday evening.

On Monday, another accused in the case, Abdul Kader of Borpathar village under Rongjuli police station of Goalpara, was arrested after he was picked up from the Rongjuli area.

Among the 29 accused, five are headmasters, one teacher, four owners of customer service points (CSPs) of nationalised banks, a president of a school management committee besides at least 10 middlemen and a couple of electronic data processors.

They have been arrested over the past couple of weeks for allegedly misappropriating pre-matric scholarship funds worth about ₹10 crore, meant for economically disadvantaged minority students.

A case was earlier registered at the CID Police Station.

CID teams have since been conducting raids in different districts to nab the accused in siphoning off the scholarship funds.
