Assam: Woman held captive and raped for a month

ASSAM: In another show of how unsafe it has become for women in Assam, a young 23-year old girl was brutally raped and left on the street. She later succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday. The victim had allegedly eloped with her boyfriend Dipankar Chutia, but on finding out that he was married and had a child she refused to stay with him. This happened in the Lakhimpur district of Assam.

This apparently angered Dipankar who along with his friend Krishna Bora repeatedly raped her for an entire month. She was tortured on a regular basis and when her health started deteriorating, they threw her out on the street. Locals found the victim and admitted her to a local hospital on June 18 where she later died on June 20.

Relatives of the victim deny claims that Dipankar was her boyfriend and allege that she was actually abducted while heading to the market. The accused however denies knowing anything on the case and pleads ignorance.

The police have however taken both the accused into custody and are investigating the case. An FIR has been registered by the family of the victim.
