Silchar: In what may be termed as an embarrassing situation for Assam University, a professor has been accused by a student of sexual harassment within the campus. The head of Agricultural Engineering Department, Assam University, has reportedly been relieved from his post in connection with this case.

Sources have revealed that the HOD was relieved of his position after Assam University Students' Union members apprised the registrar S. Bhattacharjee and vice-chancellor (in charge) D.Pandya of the situation on Thursday and gheraoed them in this connection following which Sudipto Sarkar, head of Agricultural Engineering Department, was relieved from his position.

Narrating the account, a student who was a victim said that Sarkar had been harassing her for the last few months, however, she did not raise her voice earlier as she was afraid that her career would be ruined.

She said the varsity authority was informed about the matter via a complaint on July 16, but no action was taken for 10 days. She also filed a complaint against two students of the same department for allegedly threatening her of dire consequences if she went ahead regarding the matter. The students, Sanjit Kumar Borah and Manas Jyoti Bharali, allegedly have "good connections" with Sarkar.

The student alleged that Sarkar always tried to talk uncomfortable things and asked to send him her pictures. He often insisted to go to his place and have drinks and marijuana with him, she said.

She alleged that Sarkar had started pressurising her regarding things related to her academic career when she did not entertain his offer for sexual favours.

Milon Das, president of the Assam University Students' Union, demanded that Sarkar be suspended by Monday and threatened of large-scale protests if the demand is not fulfilled.

However Sarkar seemed adamant when he said the truth would be revealed in front of everyone after the matter is inquired thoroughly.
