Assam: Tarun Gogoi arrested along with other Congress leaders near GST meet venue

GUWAHATI, November 10, 2017: Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi and other top Congress leaders were arrested on Thursday near the venue of the GST Council meeting as a preventive measure to stop them from staging a protest.

"The former chief minister and other senior leaders of Congress were staging a protest against the GST Council meeting that had just begun at a hotel here on Thursday morning," police said.

A huge contingent of police posted near the venue forcibly evicted the Congress leaders — including state Congress president Ripun Bora, leader of Congress legislature party Debabrata Saikia and former minister Rockybul Hussain.

Gogoi, who went out of office last year after three successive terms, said he was going to the venue of the meet only to welcome the delegates and not disrupt the meeting.

"There was no need for police to arrest me. I was there to welcome all the delegates. We are not against GST. We only wanted to request them to reform the tax regime as the present system has caused a lot of hardships for the people, small-scale and medium-scale industries, cottage industries and traders," Gogoi said.

The octogenarian, who is under CRPF Z-plus cover, refused to travel in his bulletproof car to Gorchuk Police Station and chose to board the police bus along with other Congress leaders who had been arrested. The 23rd GST Council meeting began here on Thursday with officers-level consultations. The ministeriallevel discussions will take place on Friday, where review of and revisions to the existing GST structure are expected.
