Assam | Speaker Goswami disallows adjournment to discuss fuel price rise

GUWAHATI | September 25, 2018 (UNI):

An adjournment motion sought by the Opposition Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) to discuss fuel price rise issue in the Assam Legislative Assembly was disallowed by Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami today.

The Opposition had moved for the adjournment motion yesterday, with the Speaker reserving the ruling for today.

Speaker Goswami, in his ruling, maintained that though the matter was 'definite' and 'urgent', it could be discussed under other devices in the House.

"Though the issue needs discussion, it can be done through other provisions and an adjournment motion is not required for it," he said.

The Speaker's decision to reserve the ruling for today had led to strong protests from the Opposition, with the Congress resorting to sloganeering and displaying placards in the well of the House yesterday.
