GUWAHATI: While trying to hit out at Assam Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, Amit shah said that the great Ahom ruler Sukapha had driven away the Mughal invaders who attacked Assam in the Battle of Saraighat fought in 1671, BJP national President Amit Shah said that "Congress and Tarun Gogoi have been protecting the decedents of the Mughals" Shah alleged. In the process he goofed up with history of Assam.
The BJP has been trying to make its campaign emotive and calling the ensuing Assam poll as the Battle of Saraighat with its clarion call to form a government which would drive away the alleged illegal migrants from Assam. BJP is trying to polarise the Hindu and tribal votes in Assam where the Muslim form over 34 percent of the population.
But in the process Shah apparently goofed up with historical facts.
While Sukapha died in 1268, the Mughal Empire was set up in 1526.
Upper Assam is a stronghold of the Congress and the Ahom community has always supported the Congress.
