Assam police personnel caught “demanding” money from auto-rickshaw driver

An Assam police personnel was caught on camera asking money from an auto rickshaw driver in Khatkati under Khatkati police station in Karbi Anglong recently.

This video went viral on social media attracting criticisms from several quarters.

In the video, the Assam police personnel was "demanding" money from an auto rickshaw driver where he was caught saying "Give the monthly collection; the date is already 14, since many have already paid their monthly due; you have to pay today".

While the driver replied, "this is my first trip". In a "harsh" voice, the police personnel said, "no way you have to give today."

Meanwhile, when contacted, the Superintendent of Police, Karbi Anglong, Gaurav Upadhyay informed that the matter was reported to him only yesterday. "The police personnel will be removed from service and strict action will be taken," he said.

Furthermore, he said that massive drive will be undertaken to sensitise the auto rickshaw and other local taxi drivers on the new provisions of the MV Act to bring them in full compliance.

It may be mentioned that on July 30, a group of Karbi Anglong journalists had gone to Manja Police checkpoint (16 kms from Diphu) to seek clarification on a case where authorities were caught red handed taking bribe from a truck driver.

"Instead of giving security to a public, the police are indulging in illegal activities and that is why many illegal activities are happening in Khatkati area, situation along the inter-state border with Nagaland," said one of the concerned citizens.
