GUWAHATI, February 21, 2018: Assam government has moved the Supreme Court for relaxation of linking Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile phones as the state is yet to complete enrollment.

Parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told the Assembly on Wednesday that income tax department had already relaxed Assam tax payers from the compulsory linking of their IT files with Aadhaar.

"Government of Assam through the Unique Identification Authority of India has informed the concerns of people and requested a similar relaxation," Patowary said while assuring that people had nothing to worry about.

The Supreme Court had earlier extended the deadline for linking the bank accounts and mobile phones with Aadhaar till March 31.

Aadhaar enrollment in Assam had to be stalled in 2014 following concerns by local organisations that illegal migrants might get citizenship through Aadhaar. The state government, however, decided to go ahead with the exercise after UIDAI made it clear that Aadhaar was not a proof of citizenship.

Patowary said 141 branches of banks and 164 post offices had started the exercise for their customers while the same for rest of the residents would be done by the deputy commissioners from next month.

The exercise will begin from March 27 at the enrollment Centers to be set up at the district, sub-divisions, blocks, circles, zila parishads and town committees. The exercise is likely to be completed in a year.
