Assam: Member of foreigners tribunal physically assaulted by lawyers!
Three advocates are allegedly arrested for physically assaulting, Ajay Phukan, a member of the Foreigners Tribunal in Goalpara in Assam.
The attack was fallout of heated argument between them relating to judgement on some Doubtful-voter cases in the tribunal court. Phukan's office chamber on the court premises was ransacked .
A police officer said, "The lawyers were miffed at judge pronounced eight persons as foreigners."
Such voter identity of whose are doubtful and their names are yet to be cleared by the Foreigners tribunal are bracketed as doubtful voter.
Gauhati High Court Judge Ujjal Bhuyan, Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Political) T Y Das, Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay and Special Additional DGP (Law and Order) Kuladhar Saikia rushed to Goalpara to take stock of the situation
Das said, "Security of judges are non-negotiable. We want to say from the government side that we take this assault on the Member of the Foreigner's Tribunal very seriously. We want to see there is no compromise on the safety of the Members of the Foreigner's Tribunal. We will do everything to see the culprits are brought to book."
Leader of the Opposition in Assam assembly Debabrata Saikia said that incident is unfortunate. "The high court and bar council must institute an inquiry into the incident."
