Assam: Jailer suspended for allowing Cong leaders to click picture with Akhil Gogoi inside jail premises!

Guwahati, November 10, 2017: A jailer of Dibrugarh central jail in upper Assam has recently been suspended for allowing two Congress leaders to click photographs with peasants' leader Akhil Gogoi inside the jail.

Inspector of prisons, Assam in a statement said that Arup Kumar Patangia, the jailer was put under suspension after an inquiry by deputy commissioner, Dibrugarh revealed lapses on his part. Akhil was arrested on September 13 for delivering a provocative speech during a public rally at Moran in Dibrugarh district where he allegedly instigated people to take up AK-47 rifles in their movement against the government. He was booked under the sections of National Security Act and is currently in judicial custody since September 18.

The statement informed that the leader of the opposition, Debabrat Saikia and another Congress MLA from Mariani, Rupjyoti Kurmi were granted permission by Dibrugarh deputy commissioner to meet Akhil on November 1 inside the jail.

"Both MLAs met the NSA detainee for about 45 minutes and after the meeting they visited the inner premises of the jail and also clicked photographs of themselves along with the NSA detainee. Jail being an out of bounds area where unauthorized entry of any persons is banned by Rule 26 of the Assam Jail Manual, the question of clicking of photograph inside the Jail by any such person does not arise," said the statement.

Saikia, a Congress MLA from Nazira constituency is a son of former Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia. Strict action would be taken against Bikash Bijoy Das, superintendent of the jail.

Congress had vehemently opposed Akhil's arrest saying that by arresting him the BJP-led government had throttled a voice which stood against the "anti-people" policies in the state since it came to power in May 2016.

Akhil who leads Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti has been vocal against BJP government's move to grant Citizenship to Hindu migrants from Bangladesh, construction of bug dams in Northeast and river linking project, among others.
