GUWAHATI, January 15, 2018: A female rhino was shot dead by poacher at the Assam's Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO declared World Heritage site on January 15, a senior Forest department official said.
Two gunshots at around 9:10pm at night was heard by the forest guard at Daflang camp under Bagore range of Kaziranga National Park. The forest guard after they heard the gunshot immediately reacted and fired six rounds in defense of the animals, Bikash Brahma, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) told the media.
Brahma said because of the quick action of the forest guards the poachers could not take away the horn of the dead rhino.
Senior official said that a combing operation has been launched to trace the poachers, who fled away,
This was the first incident of rhino killing that took place this year. Last year, the poachers killed five rhinos at Kaziranga National park and earlier in the year 2016, 18 rhinos were killed for their horns by the poachers.
