Assam: Excise officer held on bribery charge

GUWAHATI: Going all steam ahead, the newly formed Assam government is coming hard on officials who are going under the table and greasing their palms.

According to reports, sleuths of the Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau raided the house of Jibon Chandra Phookon, an excise officer in Golaghat district situated in the Chandan Nagar area under Club Road and caught the officer red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a woman.

The complaint lodged against the officer was on the charge for clearing an important dossier in the office.

Jibon is currently posted as Superintendent of Excise in the Golaghat Office, earlier Jibon was posted in Dibrugarh in the same capacity from 2011 to 2014 and transferred to Golaghat in 2015. Close sources to Jibon while speaking to newsmen said that the officer began amassing money through illegal means soon after he cleared APSC. With this arrest it brings another shocker after Dhemaji Police apprehended DFO Mohit Chandra Talukdar.

Along with the assistance from the Jorhat Police, a two-member team of the Vigilance and Anti Corruption department raided the residence and recovered cash, LIC certificates and other documents showing investment through land deeds or NSC certificates.

The officer is alleged to hold real estate in almost every district in Upper Assam which includes a flat in Guwahati city.
