Assam: Disappointment for State over AIIMS like institution
GUWAHATI: After last month's announcement by Union minister for health, J P Naddas that an AIIMS like institution would be set up in Guwahati, there has been no communication about the selection of the land for the proposed institution.
"A new AIIMS has been announced for Assam by our government. I have discussed the matter for land with the State Health Minister. We are expediting the process for land de-notification and transfer of land from the revenue to the health department," Nadda had said last week.
The announcement had generated a great deal of hope among the people here especially since the minister had mentioned that AIIMS would turn Guwahati into a health hub. But with no decision regarding the land, people have started started reading the announcement as an election gimmick.
As of now two plots of land have been shortlisted, one at Jarpathar near Sangchari in the northern part of the city, and another near the existing GNRC Hospital at Amingaon (with two or three villages within it) also located in the northern rim of the city. Both come under the jurisdiction of Kamrup district.
Sources told news that district officials at the Kamrup district administration are still awaiting official correspondence both from the state and central governments for the final selection of the land. It also revealed that the Kamalpur revenue circle was one of the three locations (the other two being Dimoria Mouza in the Kamrup metro district and the Shahari Mouza in Nagaon District) suggested by the State government last year for the setting up of the prestigious institution. But they were rejected as they did not meet the necessary criteria.
A plot of land should fulfill 30 criteria for a hospital of the stature of AIIMS to come up, said a source. In 2014, when the NDA government under the BJP came to power, the then Union health minister, Harshvardhan, had said AIIMS like institutions would be set up across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme.
