Assam: Congress alleges discrepancy of votes in Dhemaji by-poll!

JORHAT Apr21: The defeated Congress candidate in Dhemaji assembly bypoll Babul Sonowal on Thursday lodged a written complaint before the Dhemaji district returning officer, alleging that 85 polling votes were found not counted in the recently held byelection in the constituency.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora said, "We have found a difference of 85 votes in counting as compared to the number of voter turnout declared by the authorities. Our candidate has made written complaint before the district returning officer, Dhemaji seeking necessary steps."

 He added, "Our party has decided to take up steps on the matter soon as requirement."

Returning officer and Deputy Commissioner (Dhemaji) R A Korati said, "After receiving the complaint, we are verifying the matter. I believe it may be a mistake of calculation if it was happened as alleged."

 The bypoll to the Dhemaji seat was held on April 9, followed by its counting on April 13. BJP candidate Ranoj Pegu won the seat, defeating Congress candidate Babul Sonowal by 9,285 votes. Pegu got 75,217 votes while Sonowal got 65,932 votes.
