Assam: Are you a smoker? Beware of smoking in public places in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, July 10, 2018: City police in Guwahati has started a campaign to stop people from openly smoking and also consuming tobacco at public places.

The ones who will be found smoking and consuming tobacco in public places will be charged under the 'Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act', 2003 and can be fined or jailed. The Act prohibits smoking of tobacco in public places, except in special smoking zones in hotels, restaurants and airports and open spaces.

The city police has started this campaign from Ganeshguri. The fine can range from Rs. 200 to Rs. 5000 and the offender can be jailed for up to 5 years.

Guwahati police will continue this operation in other places of the city.
