GUWAHATI | SEPT 14, 2020:

Speculations regarding the new regional force in Assam came to an end on Monday with the formation of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), the new regional party under the aegis of All Assam Students Union and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad.

Addressing the media here on Monday, party convenor Basanta Deka said that the organizational work from the state, district, region to the booth/grassroots level has already started in 25 districts.

"We had decided to name the party as Assam Jatiya Parishad at conveners' committee meeting yesterday and while work has already started in 25 districts, very soon the rest of the districts would also be covered," Deka said.

He said that the party membership drive would begin from Tuesday, dedicated and responsible people from all communities would be inducted. "Priority would be given to the younger generation," Deka said.

He further said that the party announced that it would not be like any other party but one that is a people's party, which permanently stays connected with the people, through thick and thin.

"The party's slogan will be 'Ghore Ghore Aami', which means that we will try and connect with every house, not just before an election for votes, but will interact regularly," the party convener said.

The party has chosen former Assam Movement leader Jagadish Bhuyan as its coordinator and announced the names of its conveners for all the districts.

The new regional party has been formed 35 years after the first regional political party of Assam, Asom Gana Parishad was formed.

Reportedly, the regional party of AASU and AJYCP is likely to contest 80-100 seats in the Assembly elections in Assam during mid-2021.
