Assam | 70-yr-old ‘declared foreigner’ dies at detention center

GUWAHATI | October 26, 2019:

In another incident a 70-year-old man died in a detention camp for foreigners in Assam, due to deteriorating health on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Phalu Das, a resident of Satemari near Mukalmuwa of Nalbari district.

The deceased had been in a detention camp in Goalpara in lower Assam since July 2017. He was admitted to hospital on October 11 after his health deteriorated; he was later referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where he died during treatment.

Despite having all documents he was declared foreigner and put into detention camp.

Das' family has refused to accept his body and alleged that they were not informed about his health condition.

The incident has prompted the Assam government to review the conditions in state detention centres.
