ASSAM: According to sources, it has been reported that five persons were apprehended by the Assam police on account of chasing a Raj Bhavan car when Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa's wife Rita Rajkhowa was travelling by road from Guwahati to Itanagar. The culprits have been identified as Ashim Hazarika and Ranjit Saikia of Sonitpur district in Assam. While the other three are said to hail from Uttar Pradesh have been identified as Dharmendra Kumar (Muzaffarnagar), Md Akhtar and Md Naseem (both from Ghaziabad).
It was reported that three days ago, a white Maruti Swift Dzire bearing the registration number AS-01 BS-3236 began chasing her car on National Highway 715 after crossing Sonapur on the eastern outskirts of Guwahati. They tried to stop the Raj Bhawan's car by shouting and signaling with their hands.
The miscreants car overtook the Raj Bhavan car and stopped ahead on the highway, and tried to stop the car. The First Lady, however, asked her driver Jitumoni Nath not to stop. A few minutes later the miscreants once again overtook her car and tried to obstruct it, but failed.
This time, her PSO S Saikia who was also seated by the driver noticed that the Swift Dezire did not have a number plate. This way they drove at high speed for about 25 kms until they reached Jagiroad police station and reported the incident. By then the Swift Dezire had disappeared.
While the Governor's wife later left for Itanagar with a police escort vehicle provided at Nellie, another police vehicle also arrived from Itanagar which escorted her safely to the Raj Bhavan. By the time she reached Itanagar, it was already past 8 PM, a Raj Bhavan press release said.
Meanwhile, the police have so far arrested five persons, who, on being produced in a court on Monday, were remanded in two days' police custody. While the Raj Bhavan press release said that the intention of the miscreants could have been to commit robbery, police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the incident.
Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa has asked governments of both States to introduce strict highway police patrol in order to ensure safety of people.
"If such a frightful incident could happen to the First Lady while travelling on the highway and that too in broad day light, what could happen in the case of other people, more particularly women and children, travelling by road," Governor Rajkhowa said.
