ITANAGAR, May 27: Kishon Tekseng from Yingkiong in Upper Siang district and Taka Tamut from Jomlo Mongku in Siang district scaled Mount Everest without the help of Sherpas.

The two mountaineers reached the summit of the highest peak in the world on May 24 after a gruelling 13 hours of non-stop ascent from the last camp.

Sports & Youth Affairs department joint director, Ramesh Linggi, informed that the duo was supported by two Sherpas initially but one among got a head injury and had to be evacuated by helicopter for treatment while the other got high altitude sickness after reaching the base camp four, the last camp.

Informing that the duo continued their ascent to the top without the assistance from Sherpas, Linggi said that the decision was very risky and challenging one but it turned out to be fruitful for them and thus created a history.

"They unfurled the Tricolour, Arunachal Pradesh logo and the department's logo on the top. Another exemplary record of the duo was that Tekseng achieved the feat without using supplementary oxygen till base camp IV", said Linggi.

Both mountaineers were trained by the Directorate of Youth Affairs, under the guidance of Dr K Romeo Meetei, and were trained for the last 4 years in different national institutes and locations. Before the Mt. Everest expedition both Tamut and Tekseng scaled Mt. Stok Kangri, at Ladhak Himalayas as pre Everest Expedition under the leadership of Dr Meetei.

This year, the department of Youth Affairs, sponsored three mountaineers from the state including Muri Linggi for an Everest expedition.
