All Northeast CMs are not opposed to CAB, claims Tripura Chief Minister

SHILLONG | Dec 06, 2019:

Tripura's Chief Minister, Biplab Kumar Deb on Friday gave an entirely different perspective as far as Northeast's opposition to Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2019 is concerned.

"The entire country has welcomed this move and even all the chief ministers of Northeast are not opposed to this bill," Biplab told media persons in Shillong here today.

The Tripura CM was in Shillong to attend the Chief Ministers' Conclave which was chaired by Chief Minister, Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma on the concluding day of the North East Food Show 2019 today.

Furthermore, he asked the people to first go through the CAB and NRC before coming to any conclusion. "That is why I keep on saying, first read the CAB and NRC, then raise objections" he said.

He said that apprehensions over CAB that it will change the demography of the Northeast is a "wrong" notion. "This bill is to protect the states and secure the country; it is not that anyone can come and go and the union home minister had placed it beautifully in front of the country where he had stated that the government will identify them accordingly before letting them enter the country," he said.

He further justified that all the clauses to protect the ADCs and areas falling under Sixth Schedule have been discussed and they will be protected under this bill.

It may be mentioned that while on one hand, the Tripura CM had claimed that all the CM welcome the bill, on the other, the Meghalaya government on Friday made it very clear that it is "unhappy" with the bill.
