A rare disease in times of COVID-19 puts Assam man in a fix

A man from Assam, who was suffering from Albinism had recently become a victim of racism.

One Bulbul Ali, who has Albinism, which is a rare skin disease, had left Bulbul Ali's skin and hair white. But he never allowed the disease to impede his life.

In times of Covid-19 pandemic, Bulbul had been having a hard time selling clothes by traveling across his home district Jorhat in Assam to support his family. Most of the time, it became impossible for him to earn as residents of various villages in his sales route have barred his entry 'as he looks like a foreigner'. The villagers fear that he might be a carrier of the Covid-19 virus.

According to Guwahati-based physician Dr. Walliul Islam, Albinism is a disease, which affects skin pigmentation. The affected person is left with white hair and skin due to the absence of melanin.

The doctor said that people, who do not have melanin pigment, look like foreigners as their skin is white and they have blue cornea. Bulbul is also infected by this disease.
