Kuki Inpi condemns Oct 17 arson case in Mizoram's Vairengte

The Kuki Inpi, the apex body of the Kuki people in Manipur, has condemned the October 17 incident in which miscreants from Assam burned down houses belonging to the Mizo community in Vairengte village.

The apex body also brought up the misery caused to the Mizo community through the consequent blockage by the locals of Assam of all commercial roads connecting Mizoram that supplied essential commodities.

According to the apex body, the disputed area has been the ancestral land of the Mizo community before the annexation of the entire Chin Lushai Hill by the British in 1889 and was still under Mizoram after it attained statehood in 1987.

It further said that frequent altercations concerning the disputed land could have been avoided through the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971, had the state boundaries been properly demarcated.

The Kuki Inpi has also urged the Assam Government to take action against the miscreants for the “savagery meted out to the Mizo community.”
